Wood is a hardy material that is easy to clean. With a coat of paint to match your home’s colour scheme, you can make your home more functional and organized with mere pieces of wood at an affordable price. Here are some ideas:

1) Build a shoe rack

Shoes aren’t heavy items, but because you can’t stack them one on top of the other, it’ll make sense to build a simple rack to store all your shoes. For practicality, ensure that the pieces of wood that you choose aren’t too thin (to the point where the wood will bend after placing shoes on them). Choose dark colours (not white) by spray painting them as lighter colours will show the dirt more obviously.

2) Multi-purpose hanger

Get a long strip of wood and nail in hooks that are spaced out. Secure the strip of wood height-wise on your wall and you immediately have a hanger for handbags, belts, hats, coats, umbrellas and other accessories that would often end up on the floor, on the bed or on a chair. Nailing the hooks in a zig-zag position would mean items won’t overlap too much.

3) Make a simple stool or stepper

There can be never too many stools in a home, as stools can double up as a magazine rack or a place to put your mug if you happen to be sprawled out on the carpet with your favourite book. Just make sure you have exact fitting blocks of wood and use point jointers to make your job so much easier. A stepper also makes a great gift idea for a housewarming as it’s one of those things homeowners never really think of buying until the need arises to reach for something on the higher cabinets.

4) Multi-purpose boxes

Nail 5 pieces of equal-sized wood to make a box, and you have a perfect container for fruits, or books, or knick-knacks. Make a row of them of equal or different sizes, and your kitchen/office will be so much more organized.
